Margaret Durrett Smith has played her last tennis match, as she transitioned into heaven on March 12, 2025. Margaret was born on December 17, 1928, to Lois Morris and Benjamin Franklin Durrett in Arcadia, Louisiana. She experienced an idyllic childhood with her sister Betty. Leaving home, she attended Louisiana Tech University, pledging Kappa Delta Sorority and became a medical lab technician. While working at the Hodge Clinic, her good friend Mary Nell asked her to meet the guy who was flying to Ruston, LA with her fiancé, Gerald. Margaret agreed to the double date and she met P.K. Smith, the love of her life. They met in June and married on December 28, 1950. P.K., a marine, received orders and off to California they went. When his service ended, they returned to Ruston where he finished at LA Tech on the GI bill and their first child, Virginia Ann (Ginger) was born. His engineering degree took them to south Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma City. In OKC, their second daughter, Lois Ray (Lory) arrived. Many happy years were spent in the Quail Creek area of OKC. Here, Margaret renewed her love of oil painting and discovered her second love, tennis. Life soon revolved around league matches and tournaments. In 1983, a move to The Woodlands, Texas, changed her environment which made tennis, and her circle of friends expand to new heights. She and P.K. became world travelers, visiting many countries, states, and crossing the oceans.
The essence of Margaret was being a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother. She always had a love of brownies, art, nature and her beloved animals.
Margaret is survived by her daughters, Ginger Yeakley and husband David, of Spring Branch, TX, Lory Margraves and Scott of Houston, TX.; grandchildren, Bryan Yeakley, Linday Yeakley McFadden, Madeline, Missy and Molly Margraves; great grandchildren, Addison and Grayson Yeakley, Oliver, Harris, Davis, and James McFadden.
