Larry Roger Stanley, 83, passed-away on September 3, 2021, after battling several medical conditions.
Larry graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Music Education.
His calling was to be a Band director. He was the band director in Winnsboro, LA from 1966-1977 then moved to Airline High School in Bossier City, LA in 1977 where he retired in 1991.
Music and mentoring his students were his true passions. He provided leadership, lessons in teamwork, a deeper understanding of music and fun experiences. He took the band to band camp each year which was always a lesson in hard work. The bands also traveled to out of state and out of country marching competitions under his leadership. These trips provided so many experiences for the students. For example, on the way home from the St Petersburg Festival band trip he took the band to Cape Kennedy to witness the launch of Apollo 13. To this day, many of his prior students comment on the positive influence he had on their lives.
Larry was also an avid Ham radio operator. Many will know him by his call sign, WA5LGO. He enjoyed being connected with others all over the world before we had cell phones and social media. He also taught classes for those wishing to become licensed.
Larry is survived by his daughter, Beth Jewell; stepdaughters Kerri Nielsen and Kristie Manchester; brother, Scott Stanley; 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife, Susan Stanley; son, Roger Stanley; and ex-wife, Patricia Stanley.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on September 25, 2021 at Antioch United Methodist Church at 3406 Hwy 544, Simsboro, LA 71275.
