Johnny Frank McIntosh was one of 6 children born to Frank McIntosh and Ada Green McIntosh in the Mount Patick community on January 17th, 1939, and he passed away peacefully at Alpine Nursing center in Ruston on January 8, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Faye Walker, JoAnne Gardner and Betty Jean Harvey and his brother Billy McIntosh. He was also preceded by his daughter Cindy Roberson and his partner Cheri Thomas and step-daughter Terri Stewart. He is survived by 2 daughters Cheryl and Angela as well as a brother, Don. He has 5 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Johnny Frank resided in Farmerville most of his life and worked for J O “Red” Willet Pipeline, T. E. Mercer Company, and for many years Don Barron Construction. He and Cheri operated the washateria in Farmerville until he retired just a couple of years ago. He enjoyed working on the pipeline the best. He was a talented boom operator and very good at his job laying pipeline despite once sinking a D9 Caterpillar in a cranberry bog in Wisconsin.
Johnny never met a stranger and enjoyed people more than anything else. He was genuinely interested in others and had friends across all social and racial lines. He was just as comfortable talking to the “haves” as he was sitting down with the “have nots”. Whether breakfast at Huddle House or McDonald’s or lunch at his favorite spot, Sevins, for a special of chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes, he could always be found sharing a meal with others. He loved going to the bank and visiting or passing the time at the washateria swapping stories. People are drawn to compassion and generosity and that is what you found in Red. Johnny loved a mess of white perch, or some fried squirrel, and a good baseball game especially if it was the Yankees (even though they let him down this year in the World Series). He kept up with every pitch of the playoffs this season able to give you a run down of the key plays of every game.
Johnny was a prankster. One of his nieces related the story of him slipping into the kitchen where the gas stove was not working. As his brother worked to get the gas stove lit, Johnny lit a firecracker and threw it under the stove. Needless to say the firecracker went off the kitchen got evacuated. He loved to laugh, even if it was at himself.
In recent years attending church at First Baptist in Bernice has been a priority in his life. Until Cheri’s death they attended together, and until he became too sick to come, he was steadfast and faithful. He enjoyed bringing others to church and his faith started to grow. He was still a member at Mount Patrick Baptist Church and will be buried there Wednesday, January 15th near his family beneath a tombstone of his choosing that simply says, “Here Lay Red”. He will be missed by his family and the entire community.
“Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed – in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead in Christ will be raised incorruptible, and we all shall be changed” (I Cor. 15:51-52)
“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (I Cor. 15:57)
