Funeral services for Jane Colvin Bryan, 89, of West Monroe, Louisiana will be held at noon Friday, November 4, 2016 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe with Rev. Woods Watson officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until noon. Gloria Jane Colvin was born on March 9, 1927 and moved to Heaven on November 1, 2016. She graduated from Louisiana Tech at the age of 19 and began her teaching career in Delhi, Louisiana. Many of her beloved students still stay in contact with her. She went on to obtain a master degree in teaching and later a master degree in library science.Jane is best known as a nationally recognized librarian in Mississippi. She served as director of the Pike -Amite-Walthall library system in McComb, MS. She then went on to lead the Jackson-George Regional Library System in Pascagoula. She was responsible for building one of the best and most progressive libraries in the state there in the 1980. Many of the reading and learning programs she developed in Mississippi were recognized nationally for their innovation and creativity. She also served for six years as a board member of the Arts and Humanities counsel for the state of Mississippi.Jane retired from the Mississippi Library System and moved back home to Louisiana in 1990 to live in the Monroe area to be near friends and family. Jane was the youngest of four sisters and grew up during the Depression in Ruston, Louisiana. Jane knew no strangers, and welcomed all who would join her for storytelling, reminiscing and singing. She is also well known as a lover of the arts and world travel. She had a great love for any type of adventure, and was still wanting to travel in her later years. She was an active member of the Agape Sunday School Class at First West and supported numerous missions. She dearly loved her Sunday school sisters.She is preceded in death by her mother, Mattie Lou Burgess Colvin; father Louis Daniel Colvin; her sisters, Louise Colvin Covington, Joyce Colvin and Nancy Colvin, and her husband, George Bennett Bryan. She is survived by her son, Scott Bryan of Houston, Texas, and grandchildren, Alexandra Bryan and Nick Bryan, both of The Woodlands, Tx. She is also survived by niece, Susan Covington Jones and her husband John of Monroe and her adopted niece Penny Cook; nephews Louis Covington and his wife Judy of Haughton, LA; Danny Covington of Orlando, Florida and beloved great nephews Casey Covington of Little Rock, Arkansas, Jordan Covington of Haughton and Taylor Jones of Atlanta, GA.She gave us a love of travel, of culture and yet at the same time taught us to spit in every mudpuddle. She also taught us the fine art of skinny dipping. She taught all to love life and to enjoy it. She helped many kids to go to school and better themselves. This world is a much better place because of Jane Bryan. To so many she was simply known as Aunt Jane.The family would like to thank the staff of the Savannah Grand and Louisiana Hospice.
