James, a proud 1963 graduate of Crowville High School, went on to study at Louisiana State University (LSU). He spent 47 years working in the oil and gas industry, making significant contributions at top companies. He retired from Pennzoil in 1986 after a successful career and later worked as a representative for Shell Oil until his final retirement in 2014. Throughout his career, James was known for his dedication and professionalism in the energy sector.
James was the perfect family man, for whom family was the most important part of life. Whether hunting, fishing, or having big cookouts at his favorite cook shed, he always shared these moments with those he loved. His love for outdoor activities like kayaking, canoeing, goose hunting, and ATV riding was only matched by his desire to enjoy them with his family. James brought energy and fun to every gathering, always keeping family at the center of everything he did.
James was deeply patriotic, a feeling strengthened by his honorable service in the Navy during the Vietnam War where he served as a gunners mate on the USS Holder and USS Hymen. He was loyal to his country and valued friendship and camaraderie. Known for his storytelling, James had a special talent for making people laugh with funny, light-hearted stories, often teasing others in a kind way. His wit, charm, and love for life and family made him a man who will always be remembered fondly by those who knew and loved him.
James was a strong man, not just in body but in spirit. His physical strength helped him with hard work like cutting trees, splitting firewood, and growing a large garden that fed his family. But it was his deep faith that really shaped who he was. He loved going to church and Sunday School, where his beliefs were central to his life. James was also a skilled cook, often preparing meals for his Joe Phillips Sunday school class, bringing people together and creating bonds.
What really stood out to those who knew him, especially the younger members of his family, was his incredible energy and determination. They were amazed at how he kept doing hard physical work year after year, with unshakeable perseverance. To them, Pop Pop/Unc was not just strong in body, but also a living example of faith, community, hard work, humility, and dedication to his loved ones. He will surely be missed.
