Howelene Polly Skinner Mrs. Skinner passed away June 8th in Baytown, Texas from complications of Alzheimer. She was born in Weldon, Louisiana on September 26, 1919 to Thomas Clifford Shirey and Myra Lee Shirey. In 1942 she married John W. Skinner of Hilly, Louisiana and enjoyed 68 years of marriage to him. Mrs. Skinner obtained her BA, MA and 30 hrs + at Louisiana Tech and taught English in Hico and Dubach High Schools for 32 years. She was a founder of the Hilly-Greenwood Water District, obtaining the necessary signatures from that area to begin the district and serving on its board for a number of terms. She was active in her church, teaching an adult Sunday school class for many years at Hilly Methodist and later at Dubach Methodist. She also served on an advisory board of the Methodist Children home. She is survived by three siblings, Norma Prince of Chatham, Louisiana, Lyda Amason of Fordyce, Arkansas, and Harry Shirey of Weldon, Louisiana. Mrs. Skinner is also survived by three daughters, Leah Thomas of Antonito, Colorado, Alexa Ginn of Austin, Texas and Katherine Brown of Baytown, Texas and by seven grandchildren, Summer Gafford of San Antonio, Texas, Allison Thomas of Los Angeles, California, Luke Thompson of Hilly, Jessy Ary of Hilly, McKenzie Ginn of Austin, Megan Brown of Los Angeles, California, and Alec Brown of Denver, Colorado. Mrs. Skinner also leaves behind six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A public viewing will be held from 5-7 pm Monday June 15th at Kilpatrick funeral home in Ruston.
