Sarah Creekmore left a message on March 25, 2014:
I had the pleasure of talking to Ms. Schmid on a regular basis on the phone as I worked at the library. She would often call me to look up different information and make copies for her to send through the Outreach van. Eventually, we became close, and I was able to visit with her when she came by. I remember her as being bright and bold, with strong opinions and an even stronger need to assist those in need. She and I laughed about our twin worries about tornadoes; I often thought it ironic that, shortly after I had my son, my home was struck by one. She would have clucked at me for not being in a safer place, I'm sure. I have missed talking to her on a regular basis, and it was an honor to be at her service. I do not know many people with her fire, her determination, and her generosity of heart. I will miss her deeply.

Gertrud was a very talented lady who enjoyed the brethren so much! As a newer member in the church I once had the opportunity to participate in a work-party to paint her rather large house, led by taskmaster, Mr. Phil Edwards. Turned out to be a big job, but we all had big fun as well! Know the church will miss her very much. Gloria and I are praying for Katrina and the family at this loss of a dear loved one!

There is not enough space here to express how much this lady meant to us.She amazed me how much of herself she put into raising her granddaughter. It touched us to hear her working with her precious granddaughter on English homework in her German accent. She accepted my request to play the part of The Matchmaker in our church's production of The Fiddler on the Roof after refusing several times. Her reason? "I think it would be good for my granddaughter to see me do something I am not comfortable with. It might be a good example for her."We'll miss you Gertrud Schmid. Thanks for coming to our area and blessing us with the warmth and concern you showed all of us who were touched by your love...P.S. Thanks for the Cabbage Roll Recipe! It only took 10 years of tying to trick you into giving it to me and Richard , but it was too much fun and now appreciated.

My condolences to the whole family. Gertrud was a great example to me of resourcefulness and resilience in all circumstances and always had an easy smile for me. She will be missed.

I am a friend of Gertrud's granddaughter and spent a lot of time at Gertrud's house in my youth. She showed me how to make a homemade pizza for the first time, something I thought was very cool as a girl. Thank you for helping shape Katrina the wonderful person she is today and may peace be with you.
Peace of mind is a call away. We're here when you need us most.

I work at the Lincoln Parish Library and got to know Mrs. Schmid through helping her with various research questions. She was a sweetie and will be missed. My prayers are with the family.
