Fred was born to John L Turner of Colfax, Louisiana, and Sarah John Donaldson Turner, of Hodge, Louisiana, on October 31, 1940, in Jacksonville, Florida, and passed away on May 8, 2025, in Monroe, Louisiana at the age of 84.
Fred was an avid outdoorsman and a member of Liberty Hill Hunting Club for over 50 years. He spent as much time as he could hunting alongside his closest friends and family who lovingly referred to him by his CB handle, “Foxfire.” Fred was always armed with a joke or a good story paired with humor or a life lesson. Throughout his childhood, because of his father’s work, Fred was well traveled and lived many places including Florida, Alabama, Texas and Louisiana. They also lived for periods of time in Mexico and in Peru, where he learned to read, write and speak the Spanish language fluently. His family also lived in India when he was as a teen, before moving back to the U.S. where he would graduate high school in Palatka, Florida. Later, he would make his home in Monroe, Louisiana for over 50 years. Fred was a graduate of Louisiana Tech University, holding a BS degree in Chemistry with a minor in Math. Fred met Betty through his work in Alabama and the two developed a deep-rooted love and devotion to one another. Because of their love of Mexico, the two married on Cinco de Mayo, May 5, 1984, and celebrated 41 years this year. The two loved to work in their yard together and visit different Mexican restaurants. Fred was a loving, supportive and devoted father to his only child, a daughter, DeNeen. His grandchildren made him incredibly proud, and he spoke of them with immense joy. Fred loved children, was always one to leave a generous tip, and had a sweet tooth; he loved his ice cream!
Fred is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 41 years, Betty Morgan Turner; daughter, DeNeen Turner Wyles and husband Benny, who was also Fred’s best friend, of Sheridan, AR; step-mother, Petra Balbuena Turner of Houston, TX; brother, Bruce Turner and wife Marsha of Sarasota, FL; step-brother, Angel Enrique Camacho and wife Lupita of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Jessica Wyles Brown and husband Joshua, of Ruston, LA; and Benjamin Wyles and wife Emily of Minden, LA; Jordan Parker, of Crowville, LA; great-grandchildren, Camden, John-Everett, Foster, Georgia, Alec and Bryce Brown, and Piper Peevy; nephews, Nicholas and Jeremy Turner; nieces, Gabriela Saenz, Melissa Camacho, and Enma Camacho. Fred is also survived by his close cousin, Don DeFreese and wife Charlotte and numerous extended and bonus nieces and nephews, each of whom he loved dearly.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents, John L Turner and Sarah John Donaldson Turner, and lifelong friend, JW Bryan.
