Funeral services for Edward 'Red' Netherland, 85, of West Monroe, LA will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at The Pentecostals of the Twin Cities, 1255 Glenwood Drive in West Monroe, Louisiana, where he was a member, with Reverend Mark Foster officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe. He died September 17, 2011 in West Monroe, LA. Edward served as a Seaman in the United States Navy for three years during World War II in the Southwest Pacific. During his term, he was awarded the Sixth Fleet Award for his brave actions in rescuing a crew of stranded Marine officers. While in the Navy, he was responsible for piloting ship-to-shore boats. Mr. Netherland began his career at Brown Paper Mill in 1952 where he became known as 'Red'. He retired from Manville after 33 years of service as a papermaker. Edward was a devoted husband and father. He was loving and encouraging to his children and grandchildren. Edward enjoyed sports and fishing. His wife Lovelle once said, “If it has a ball in the game, he likes it.” Mr. Netherland is preceded in death by his parents, Hezzie and Muriel Cinderella Netherland; one sister; two brothers; and one daughter, Betty Carol Netherland Hatten. He is survived by his wife Lovelle Butcher Netherland of West Monroe; children, Diane and Jim Barentine, Joyce and Johnny Pauley, Thomas and Nancy Netherland, David and Sheila Netherland and son-in-law, Bob Hatten; 13 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and four brothers. Visitation is at 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, September 20, 2011, at The Pentecostals of the Twin Cities, West Monroe, same location as service.
