Edna Louise Dowell passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on September 15, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family. Mrs. Dowell affectionately known as Louise, Lou, Mother and Granmama was born March 14, 1924 in Jewel Ridge, Virginia. A true coal miner’s daughter, Mrs. Dowell was one of five daughters and the last to go to Heaven. She devoted her life to her husband, children and grandchildren and was a homemaker until the age of 54 when she decided to return to work. Mrs. Dowell enjoyed working at the Mohawk Tavern as the cashier until the age of 70 when she retired. She enjoyed cooking delicious meals and everyone loved her homemade biscuits and pancakes. She loved to go shopping, reading mystery novels; but, especially reading her Bible, attending church, and spending time with her family. Mrs. Dowell’s family and friends loved to visit her and sit around her kitchen table. You could always count on her to have a homemade cake or cookies and you knew you were welcome and loved.
Mrs. Dowell was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years, Jack Browning Dowell; her parents, Henry and Etta Lowe; her son in law, Jimmy Lofton; her sisters, Geraldine Meade, Gennette Russell Smith, Jo Edith Thomas, and Sue Lockhart; her brothers, Marvin Meade, Walter Russell, George Thomas, and Chap Lockhart; nephew, Gerald Meade; and her niece, Melanie Loe.
She is survived by her son, Browning Dowell of Nicholasville, Ky., son, Peyton Dowell of Monroe, La., daughter and son-in-law Melinda Nelson and Lance Nelson of Apple Springs, Texas, and daughter in love, Pat Dowell of Georgetown, Texas. Grandsons, Ryan Dowell, Kelly Dowell, Derek Dowell, Ethan Lofton, Ryan Gayhart, Craig Nelson, and Rick Nelson; and, granddaughters, Heather Gayhart, Danielle Dowell, Melissa Lofton, Patricia Nelson, and Haily Nelson. Eleven great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. As well as numerous nieces and nephews.
