Dr. Rick Byargeon Kilpatrick Funeral Home Ruston, LA Funeral services for Dr. Rick Byargeon will be held at 2:00 PM Monday April 8, 2013 at Temple Baptist Church in Ruston. Officiating the service will be Dr. Mack Roark, Rev. Clint Pressley, Dr. Eddie Wren and Dr. Steve Horn. Interment will follow at Pines Memorial Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Dr. Rick Byargeon pastor of Temple Baptist Church, Ruston, LA died at his home on April 4, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by family and close friends. He was born in Rayville, LA on November 8, 1957 to John C. and Audrey Hales Byargeon. After graduating from Rayville High School in 1975 he spent the next year working with his dad as a carpenter. On June l8, 1976 he married Jonann Weeks. They enrolled in Louisiana College where he graduated in l980. While at L.C. he pastored Woodlawn Baptist Church near Iowa, LA. Upon graduating he served as youth minister at First Baptist Church, Jennings, LA before entering Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, TX where he earned the M.Div. and Ph.D degrees majoring in Old Testament. While at seminary he pastored First Baptist Church Streetman, TX. During his long academic career Dr. Byargeon taught at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Singapore, Oklahoma Baptist University, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where he held the J. Wash Watts Chair of Old Testament and Hebrew. He received numerous awards during his academic career and served as interim pastor in many churches. After losing everything in Katrina he relocated to New Iberia where he served as interim pastor at Highland Baptist Church. Subsequently, he became Vice President of Academic Development at Louisiana College. Dr. Byargeon was widely published in various academic journals and translated the book of Ecclesiastes for the Holman Christian Standard Bible. He pastored Temple Baptist Church for eight years. He is survived by his wife Jonann and their son Will. Pallbearers will be Tony Young, Dr. Tommy Smith, Dr. Larry Neal, James Davison, Randy Moore, and John Hood. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff and deacons of Temple Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Rick W. Byargeon Missions Memorial Fund at Temple Baptist Church. Fond remembrances of Dr. Rick Byargeon from my time at NOBTS. He was a great professor, preacher, and a Christian gentleman.

Dr. Byargeon taught Hebrew to my husband and I at NOBTS. He was a godly man with a dedication to teaching and to God's Word. He will be missed. We are so sorry for your loss and will continue to keep you in our prayers.

Jonann & Will - My heart broke this morning when I heard Dr. Rick had lost his battle with cancer. I loved him because he baptized my husband and was a part of our Christian family. Had I received the message earlier I would have been there in person to support you in your grief. You and Will are in my thoughts and prayers. I only wish I could do more for you. I love and miss you! I will try to contact you at a later date.

Jonann and Will, I was so saddened to hear the news of Rick's passing. I know we barely shared time here on this earth while studying Hebrew together with Bob Bergen, but I will never forget what a wonderful sense of fun Rick had. I still laugh every time I see a bottle of file powder and remember the trick he played on John. I will be praying for you during this time of grief. May God enfold you in his loving arms and give you peace.

JonAnn and Will, I am so saddened to hear of Dr. Byargeon's passing never could bring myself to call him Rick. As my academic mentor, he made a profound impression on my life and ministry. Grading OT and Hebrew for him those two years at NOBTS was a joy. I learned so much from him and to this day, reference his notes. I remember well his excitement at becoming a father. Great times. I will remember you in my prayers. May the God of all comfort bring you the peace only he can.

Dr. Rick was bigger than life to us-- his example and teaching was so special and words cannot say how much we will miss him. Jonann, he is so proud of you, your strength is amazing and we hold you in our prayers.

So sorry to hear of Rick's death. He put up a good fight and now has his eternal reward.

Jonann and Will, Mona and I were saddened beyond words to hear of Rick's death. We are sorrowing for you, your larger family, and your Temple Baptist family of faith, NOT for Rick. We have all lost physical touch with someone who was special to us, but he is alive forevermore and the Lord's Spirit will fill the temporary empty place in our lives. We are praying for you and asking a special touch from the Father as He walks with you THROUGH the valley of the shadow of death. Just know that you are on our minds and in our hearts.

Jonann & Will, Norm I and our Family loved Rick so much appreciating his sermons @ Parkview Baptist Church and the fellowship we had with him when he could occasionally come to our home for Sunday lunch! I was a former student of Dr. Byargeon at the New Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Byargeon was one of the best professors that I had in the seminary. Dr. Byargeon was not a professor that settled for mediocrity from his students. He wanted us to excel to the max. His tests were one of the hardest that I took at the seminary. Because of him I learned concepts from Hermeneutics that have helped me in my ministry. I will always be thankful for his contribution in my life and in the life of many of his students. God blessed him with the gift of teaching and blessed me for being one of his students. My sincere condolences and may God bless you.

I loved Dr. Byargeon's teaching, his sense of humor... rather dry... and his passion for teaching his students. He was my professor at NOBTS and taught me some of my Hebrew classes. He expected nothing less than the best and even made Hebrew Syntax enjoyable. God bless you in your grief.

I remember "Ricky" when we were very young growing up in Rayville, LA. He was a kind and friendly person back in Elementary School also. My condolences to Rick's family and friends. I'm sure he has already heard the words "Well done, good and faithful servant!"

Dr. Byargeon was a man who God who loved people. I had a class on the book of Amos and he did a fabulous job of teaching it. I am thankful that he crossed my path. Please know that his life made a difference for the kingdom.

I never had the pleasure of sitting under Dr. Byargeon in class, but I did come in contact with him quite frequently at NOBTS. I found him to be a man of great depth & character. I am so sorry for your loss. Your family will be in our prayers.

He will be missed by many. He was truly a scholar and a gentleman.

Cant express how sorry I am . I remember little Ricky next door. He and family have been in my prayers and thoughts this last year. I just moved back to north La after being in Baton Rouge for 40 years and last few months was going to visit and I'm so sorry I didn't get over to see him. Bless all of his friends and loved ones .

I was a student of Dr. Byargeon's at NOBTS. He gave me such a deep appreciation of the Old Testament. I learned much from him. I also came to appreciate his dry sense of humor. I offer my heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time. Praying for you.

Forever grateful for how Dr Byargeon spoke into my life. At times in his class at NOBTS I thought he was tough as nails but I became more for Christ because of it and loved him for it later. Thanks again Dr. See you there or in the air. Praying for his family and church family.

Rick was both a friend and teacher to many of us. I studied under him when he was a professor at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. I also served with him on staff at Parkview Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. Great men of God, like Rick, live on through their sermons, writings, and the thousands of people whose lives he impacted and changed. He will be missed and always remembered as a great man of God.

Mary and I want to express our sincere condolences for Dr. Rick. We will always have good memories of his leadership of Temple.

Dr. Rick was a man of great impact. He touched the lives of those he shepherded at Temple, and those of lives all over North LA and beyond. I have been personally touched by his ministry. He was a true servant of God who had a burning desire to see lives changed by God's grace. I will always be grateful for his life, service, and example.

Rick was a great professor, and good friend as we served together at Country Woods. I am glad he is now experiencing what he taught so many to believe and others of us to teach.

Even though we know you are grieving, we all know that Rick is rejoicing in the presence of The Lord he served so faithfully. Jonann, You and Dr. Rick have been in our prayers for quite some time. We will sorely miss him. He was very loved by our family. Dr. Rick was with us when Suzanne's mom died, and when we had other issues. No one will ever be able to replace Dr. Rick at Temple.
