Mike was born in Monroe, LA to Virginia Zeigler Cage and Joseph Shelby Cage. He attended St. Pascal’s and St. Matthew’s in his formative years. From there, he attended and graduated from Neville High School in 1954. While there, he was a member of the baseball, basketball, and football teams playing under the legendary Bill Ruple. Mike was elected as the Student Body President and Mr. Neville High.
After graduation, he attended Louisiana Tech University where he met and eventually married Mary Virginia Stovall. He attended LSU Medical in New Orleans in 1957 and graduated in 1961. Mike began an Internship/Residency in Urology in 1961 through 1966. He was named the Outstanding Resident by his peers. From 1966 to 2021, Mike was fulfilled by practicing as a Board Certified Urologist. Mike was named Chief of Staff at St. Francis Medical Center in 1987. He served the community and St. Francis Hospital for 55 years where he always had fun doing what he loved. During these years, he became a partner at the Urology Clinic at 711 St. John Street.
Mike’s patriotism for his country was evident when he joined the U.S. Army Reserve from 1963 through 1969. He rejoined the U.S. Army Reserve and completed his 20 years of service and retired as a full Colonel. In 1991, Mike made the ultimate sacrifice and served in Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia. He was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, and Saudi Arabia Freedom Medal. Out of 360 men in his unit, regardless of rank, Mike and eleven other soldiers received a medal for outstanding service.
Mike’s greatest achievement and legacy are his four children: Laura, Mike, Elizabeth, and Sara who were born from his marriage to Mary Virginia. They enjoyed 19 wonderful years of marriage until her untimely death in 1979. He married Dianne King Snellings in 1989 and they had 33 happy years of marriage.
Throughout Mike’s life, he loved to travel. He was a master historian and could recite specific dates and details from wars to biblical history. If you were fortunate enough to be in his company, it was evident that he had a photographic memory of a vast number of subjects.
