Doris Merle McRee Musick died on March 3, 2023, at the age of 103 years in Monroe, Louisiana. Doris was born in York, Alabama, on January 19, 1920, to Joseph Neville and Martha Ann Elizabeth (Mattie) McRee (nee’ Carmichael). Doris had four older siblings —Clarise Mabel (Broadway), William Neville, Audrey Florine (Gonzales), and Joseph Chester—all of whom predeceased her.
Doris graduated from Ouachita Parish High School in 1937. In 1943, she married Virgil Musick. After Virgil returned from his service in the Army during World War II, they settled in Swartz, Louisiana, where they raised three children: Martha Gibson (Harry), Donald (Etta), and Susan Culbreath (Ed).
Doris was a charter member of St. Mark’s Methodist Church. Later in life, she became a member of Rowland Road Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and participated in Sunday school and as a Vacation Bible School volunteer.
Doris was an accomplished seamstress and crocheter, and also worked outside the home for many years as a typist for the Louisiana State Department of Highways. In addition, she had a successful small business as a specialty cake decorator. Following Virgil’s death in 1979, Doris retired and began pursuing her love of travel. During this time, she was very active in the Campers on Mission organization, and she traveled to many of the 50 states, as well as to Canada, Mexico and Scotland. She particularly loved playing card games with her friends in Campers on Mission.
In addition to her three children, Doris is survived by seven grandchildren, Ashley (Gibson) Rangel, Keith Gibson, Amy (Gibson) Lancaster, Nicole Gibson, Amanda (Musick) Matherne, Ryan Musick; and Allison Daniell; seven great-grandchildren, Raiden Rangel, Makenzie Lancaster, Todd Lancaster, Haley Lancaster, Michael Beavers, Zachary Beavers, and Tristan Matherne; and one great-great-grandchild, Novaleigh Martin.
Doris will long be remembered as an inspiration to many for her strong spirit, her irrepressible zest for life, and her faithful commitment to God.
