I remember Donna quite vividly from my childhood dance lessons at Buckingham School of Dance. Donna was one of the teachers of my class. Oh how I wanted to dance like Miss Donna! She was truly gifted. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time of sorrow.

There are not enough words to describe Donna Hemphill. She is one of a kind. Her kind loving heart included EVERYONE she came in contact with. Many children in Washington Parish have been blessed by sharing dance with Donna. She was my friend and I’ll always love and miss her. Spread your wings Donna and keep on dancing?

I have spent the past few days reflecting and trying to find the right words to share about Ms. Donna, but nothing seems good enough. I have known her my entire life. My sisters and I all took dance lessons from her over the course of about 20 years and then my daughter took lessons from her for 6 years. She is family! She was with us from pretending to be sleepy flowers and circus clowns (if you know, you know) to dance team tryouts and everything in between. So many memories were made standing before that mirror wall on Washington Street in Franklinton. She taught us shuffle ball change and pas de bourrée, but she taught us so much more than steps. She taught us how to be a lady. She taught us poise and grace. She taught us to have confidence and self-worth. She taught us dedication and hard work. I could go on and on. She always kept cost down as much as possible because she thought that everyone should have the opportunity to dance. She truly had a heart of gold. So much of who I am was developed and nurtured in her studio. I could never thank her enough for the life lessons. I challenge everyone who knew her to carry on her legacy. Dance whenever possible…and dance with your heart! Love hard! Find ways to inspire everyone around you! Give new opportunities to your community! Love your family with all of your heart! Everything you do, do it to glorify God! -Always Donna’s Dancer
