Donald L. Kneipp, resident of Chatham, Louisiana, formerly of Choudrant and Monroe, Louisiana, died peacefully on June 8, 2021, at his home. Don was born in Shreveport on February 3, 1950, to the late L.E. (Ed) Kneipp and Patricia Kneipp.
Don was a 1968 graduate of Fair Park High School in Shreveport. After high school, he attended Hendrix University in Conway, Arkansas, and Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He continued on to LSU Law School where he graduated with honors in 1975. He began his long and successful career as an attorney at Hudson, Potts, and Bernstein in Monroe in 1975. He later opened his own firm where he continued to practice until his recent retirement. In 2015, he was appointed as the District Defender for the 2nd Judicial District of the state of Louisiana. One of his proudest professional achievements was being a member of the American INNS of Court.
In October of 1978, Don married his best friend, Kay Inzina Kneipp, a lifelong resident of Monroe, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church. Together they lived in Monroe until 2005 when they retired to Caney Lake. Don and Kay were active members of Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Monroe where Don served as a lector and Eucharistic minister. After retirement, they attended St. Lucy’s Catholic Church in Hodge.
Don was a beloved husband, father, Poppa, friend, and mentor. He was an avid LSU Tiger Fan: an attribute that he passed down to his children and most of his grandchildren. Above all, he loved God and family. His generosity, selflessness, and quiet leadership were all wrapped in humility, as he never wanted to be in the spotlight. He was, however, a beacon, and his light shone brightly in the lives of all those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Kay, and mother, Patricia Grissom Kneipp, his 5 children: Kristy (Brady) Day, Katy (Mark) Lingle, Kellye (Nate) Cunningham, Emily Kneipp, and Samuel Kneipp; 9 grandchildren: Drew and Alex Day, Sarah Kathryn and Matthew Lingle, Paige, Ella, Avery and Cole Cunningham, and Lonnie Ray Hasley; his siblings: Judy Kneipp Bouchard, Lee (Lindy) Kneipp, and Dave (Kelly) Kneipp; his uncle Stuart (Linda) Grissom; numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren; and his dedicated work family: Donna McLaughlin and Sharon West.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 12, at 9:00 am followed by 10:00 am Mass at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Monroe. Interment will take place immediately following the Mass at St. Lucy’s Catholic Church in Hodge under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston.
At Don’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to MD Anderson Hospital, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Catholic Charities of North Louisiana.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
