Dewey C. Thurmon of Ruston died at age 93 on Friday, October 21st. Visitation will be on Monday, October 24th at 9:30 a.m. followed immediately by the funeral at 11:00 a.m., both at the Presbyterian Church of Ruston. Reverend Edith Hill will officiate. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston, LA. Mr. Thurmon was born on May 17, 1918, in Ruston, Louisiana. He attended Ruston High School and Louisiana Tech. He responded to the draft and entered the U.S. Army as a private in March, 1941, served five years, and was discharged as a Captain in February, 1946. Mr. Thurmon married Virginia Montford, also a Ruston resident, on July 6, 1942. After their five-week honeymoon in San Francisco awaiting orders, Mr. Thurmon shipped out to Sydney, Australia, in September, 1942, where he joined General Douglas MacArthur's staff in the Pacific Front General Headquarters as Company Commander. He spent Christmas of 1942 in Brisbane, Australia and Christmas of 1943 in Port Mosby, New Guinea. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in January, 1943, and to Captain in January, 1944. He was with General MacArthur in the Dutch East Indies during the U. S. military invasion of the Philippines on October 20, 1944. He returned to the U.S. in 1945. Following his discharge from the Army in February, 1946, Mr. Thurmon returned to Ruston where he was in business for 57 years. He was an oil and gasoline distributor for Amoco, then Texaco, until 2003. He served on the Board of Directors at the Bank of Ruston for over 30 years and was a member of the Kiwanis club from 1946 to 1970. He was a member of the Barksdale Air Force Base Officer's Club, the Retired Officer's Association, the Veteran's of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. Mr. Thurmon is survived by his son, Steven M. Thurmon; his daughter, Linda Thurmon Kearney and her husband, Stephen Kearney; his grandson, Kenneth Kearney; his granddaughter, Kristin Grant and her husband, Matthew, and their son, Jacob; his sister-in-law, Helen W. Mrs. Clyde Thurmon of Lake Charles; and eight nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren. Preceding Mr. Thurmon in death were his wife of 63 years, Kathryn Virginia Montford Thurmon; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. Thurmon; his sister, Alene Thurmon Goodwyn; his two brothers, Clyde W. Thurmon and Newton H. Thurmon; and his sister-in-law, Nell K. Mrs. Newton Thurmon. Pallbearers will be Charlie Alexander, Charlie Bourgeois, Benny Denny, Jim Hall, Marty Jacobsen, and Tommy Phillips. Honorary pallbearers are James Davison, James Evans, Dr. Hoye Grafton, Dr. James Green, Dr. Marvin Green, Dr. Barry Johnson, Dr. J.V. Jones, Johnny Maxwell, L.D. “Buddy” Napper, Wayne Parker, and Dr. Dan Reneau. The Thurmon family wishes to thank Hospice of Caring Hearts and Mr. Thurmon's sitters who cared for him these past four months. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Presbyterian Church of Ruston or to a charity of one's choice.
