Daniel Scott Bryan of St. Joseph (Lake Bruin), Louisiana, a retired United Airlines Captain, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2025. He was 72 years old. Scott was born February 22, 1952, and was the son of the late Jane Colvin Bryan and George Bennett Bryan. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and numerous aunts and uncles.
Growing up in Delhi, Louisiana and McComb, Mississippi, Scott discovered an early love for music and aviation. After graduating from McComb High School in 1970, Scott made his living as a flight instructor and band member in the McComb area and eventually enrolled at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Studies in 1978. During his early career, Scott was a Learjet 25 Captain/Chief Pilot for several charter companies, which included some international flight experience. After joining Continental/United Airlines in 1987, Scott was Second Officer on the B-727, First Officer on the MD-80, First Officer on the B-757 and B-767, and Captain on the B-737. Also, during his long career, Scott earned certification as an Airline Transport Pilot for Lear Jet, B-757, B-767, and B-737 airliners. He was also certified as a Gold Seal Flight Instructor and as a Certified Ground Instructor.
Scott was also an experienced professional keyboard musician and played in various groups in his early years. As fate would have it, one of his regular charter jet clients was early rock and roll music legend, Jerry Lee Lewis. After learning of Scott’s talent, Lewis invited Scott to play in his backup band on numerous occasions. Scott’s love for music was always a part of his life. After retiring, Scott continued to fill his home with music of all types and also kept his keyboards and sound equipment in use. He enjoyed a peaceful and happy life of retirement with multiple hobbies on Lake Bruin as well as friendships with his buddies in the “Tensas Posse.”
Scott is survived by his two children, Alexandra Scott Bryan of Montgomery, Texas and Nicholas Bennett Bryan of Denton, Texas as well as several cousins.
