Cona S. Spillers Kilpatrick Funeral Homes Farmerville, LA Funeral services for Cona S. Spillers, 97, of Spencer, LA, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Spencer Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Ganey and Rev, Jerry Fletcher officiating. Burial will follow at Liberty Cemetery in Linville, LA. Visitation will be Monday, April 30, 2012 at Spencer Baptist Church from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Cona was born on September 22, 1914 in Linville, LA and passed away on April 27, 2012 at St Francis Medical Center in Monroe, LA after a brief illness. He graduated from Linville High School and attended Ouachita Parish Jr. College in Monroe, LA for one year. On July 19, 1934, he married Lois Brasher, who was his loving wife for almost 78 years. He worked in the gas field in different capacities until his retirement at the age of 63. In addition to his primary work, he was also a community leader, who was kind, fair, and never met a stranger. He was dedicated to making Union Parish a better place to live. During a long life of accomplishment, some of the more notable were: As a Police Juror for 5 consecutive terms, from 1956-1976, he was instrumental in paving 60 miles of parish roads. He was one of three members of the building committee that led to the formation of the Union Parish Courthouse. He was chairman of the Union Parish Wildlife Committee, and from 1966-1976 was board member and President of the Union Parish Community Action Association. He served on the board of the North Delta Regional Planning and Development District, Inc., an organization that worked to expand the economic growth in North Louisiana. He was a faithful member of Spencer Baptist Church and served as a deacon for over 50 years. These accomplishments led to a Recognition of Lifetime Achievement award by the Union Parish Police Jury. Cona also helped create the Spencer-West Sterlington Fire District and in 2007, he was honored as the Union Parish citizen of the Year for his many years of public service. He was a life member of the NRA, an organization he was proud to be associated with. He loved nature, the outdoors, hunting and fishing his entire life. In his later years, he was an avid deer hunter, killing his last deer, a seven point buck, at the age of 96. He was an incredible son, husband, and father. He is survived by his wife Lois B. Spillers and daughter Sherry A. Spillers of Spencer. daughter-in-law Caroline Spillers of Batesville, AR, grandsons Kevin Spillers and wife Kelly of Chicago, IL and Chris Spillers and wife Carla of Rogers, AR, great grandchildren Amber, Jordan, Tyler, Dexter, Mason, and Fletcher Spillers, niece Betty Owen Snell and husband Jasper Snell, Jr., who were also hunting partners, and numerous great nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents W. H. and Martha Spillers and his beloved son Ronnie Spillers. He also was preceded in death recently by Little Spence, his loving cat of 16 years. Pallbearers will be Charles Thomas, Mike Jones, Ronnie Jones, Dave Garris, Keith Laster, and, Joe Wheeler. Honorary pallbearers are Jasper Snell, Jr., Les Parks, John E. Parks, Jimmy Hollis, and Glenn Ham. A special thanks is given to the nursing staff at SFMC who were compassionate and caring and to the friends and family members who visited and offered support during a difficult time.
