Clifford Lyons Lawrence, Jr. 83, passed away after a brief illness on January 7, 2025, surrounded by his wife and daughter. A Gathering will be held from 2PM until 4PM on Sunday, January 12, 2025 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home, 1200 Lamy Lane, Monroe, LA.
He was born on July 18, 1941, in Alexandria, LA to Clifford Lyons “Dick” Lawrence, Sr. and Marjorie Mary Cappel. Cliff was the oldest of 4 siblings to whom he was known as “Kipper.” Cliff came from modest beginnings in Pineville, LA where his family owned and operated Dick’s Bait Stand. Cliff graduated from Holy Savior Menard High School in Alexandria in 1959. Cliff paid his own way through LSU and graduated in 1963 with a degree in Business Administration. He loved telling people about the year his dorm room was located in Tiger Stadium. Cliff was a member of the ROTC at LSU. Cliff hoped to serve out his military obligation as a pilot, but due to migraines he was unable to pursue that dream. Cliff finished his military obligation as a reserve in the U.S. Coast Guard.
In 1964, he married Myra Lou Ellington of Alexandria. Cliff and Myra just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Dec 28, 2024. In 1965, they moved to Monroe, La to operate the Ellington Mayflower Transfer & Warehouse Company. In 1966, they had their only child Sara Allyson. In 1970, Cliff and the family moved to Baton Rouge so Cliff could attend LSU Law School. Upon graduation in 1973, they moved back to Monroe where Cliff practiced law for over 40 years.
Cliff’s hobbies included golf, fishing with buddies at Cocodrie, LA, hunting, camping, and snow skiing when he was younger. An outdoorsman at heart, Cliff treasured living on Bayou DeSiard for over 35 years. For several years Cliff was a staple for lunch at the men’s group table at Aron’s Pharmacy. Cliff really enjoyed time with his close buddies.
Cliff had many loyal canine companions over the years, and he loved them all. A few years ago, Cliff adopted a rescued Red Heeler that was to be named Ginger. In this last year, as Cliff’s health began to decline, she became very protective of Cliff, hardly leaving his side.
Cliff was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Joe Lawrence (Carol) of Little Rock and sister, Mary Sterling “Nine” Lawrence Antee (Kenneth) of Pineville.
Cliff is survived by his wife Myra Ellington Lawrence, his daughter Sara Lawrence Jones Brewer (Robert), 3 grandchildren Lindsey Allyson Jones, Will Edward Jones, III (Baylee) and Lawrence Foster Jones, as well as 3 great grandchildren Ward Ellington Jones, Wren Sherwood Jones, and Rush Patterson Jones, all of Monroe. Cliff is also survived by his brother, Jim Lawrence (Nancy) of Shreveport and many cherished nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the Elara Hospice Care team for their special care of Cliff this past month. The family would like to thank the many dear friends who have loved and prayed for Cliff over the years. Cliff recently made the decision to be baptized, and on Dec 8, 2024, with the help of family and friends he took the plunge. We give thanks to God for his life and for his touch on our lives as we celebrate his resurrection with the Lord.
