Memorial services for Cheryl Lynn Sutton Slavant,78, will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, November 11, 2024, at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in West Monroe.  Bro. Louis Bartet will officiate.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until time of service.

Cheryl Lynn Sutton Slavant was born on January 23, 1946, in Monroe, Louisiana, and passed away on November 6, 2024. Our mom was the matriarch of our family that loved her friends, family and God with great passion.  She married the love of her life, Jim, for a glorious 58 years.  She taught her children how to parent and that knowing Jesus is the only way.  While she was passionate about her pets, horses, gardening and country living with large family gatherings she devoted a lot of her life’s work to the goal of environmentalism and fighting for justice. She held many leadership positions and fought on many environmental fronts of noise, water and even box turtles.  She was the founding Ouachita Riverkeeper and worked tirelessly to stop the pollution of the Ouachita River.  Two documentaries recorded her efforts in The Koch Brothers Exposed and Company Town.  She was also awarded “Defender of the Environment” in 2009 from the Louisiana Environmental Action Network.  Mostly, she will be missed by all for her quick wit, infectious smile and willingness to help anyone.

She is preceded in death by her grandson, Landon Slavant; parents, John and Rachel Sutton; sisters, Jessie Hendrix, Louise Clark; and brother, J.W. Sutton.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, James Slavant; children, Karen Nelson and husband Jack, Troy Slavant and wife Kristy, Kelli Sorrells and husband Donald, Todd Slavant and wife Shawn; grandchildren, Lauren, Rachel, Zachary, Caleb, Christopher, Josh, Noah, and Valerie; 7 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; along with extended family and friends.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Morgan Hayes  and Passages Hospice, especially Amber and Patricia, for the exceptionally kind service they provided our mother.
