It was early summer 1984 when Scott and I decided to head to south Louisiana to be cooks on a big boat. He had contacts I was told so it sounded exciting enough for this 17 year old to join in with my 17 year old best friend to give it a try! We loaded up my Triumph TR7 sports car and headed south. Well, east first to Vicksburg and then south after that had my car’s engine lasted that long. It made it to a parking lot across from the police station in Vicksburg and that’s all we could get out of her. We were given permission to leave it there as long as we needed until we could get it towed one day. So we did! We left it there for a long time while we started walking south toward Beechwood, MS with the goal of hitchhiking to what would later be called the Gulf of America. We gave up at Beechwood restaurant and lounge where we got some grub and called my Pawpaw Durbin who lived down south near Amite, LA to ask for help. He kindly drove up and picked the two of us up and toted us as far as his house where we ended up spending the better part of the summer working at a local plant nursery instead of cooking on a big boat as planned. I never did learn what boat or who was hiring, but Scott had me primed for whatever adventure might have been ahead. We did have a number of adventures that summer including helping save a mom and her baby from drowning in the Tangipahoa River at a little beach just off hwy 16 in Amite. Too many more adventures to mention here but great memories for sure. We finally got back home to north LA and yes even eventually picked up the broke down TR7 which was later repaired and hit the road again! Scott and I grew up and went different directions with our lives like too often happens with old friends so I haven’t been around him and his family for nearly 40 years. That makes no sense to me as I think about it now but I still am thankful that memories of Scott stand out in my mind far above many other past and even recent memories. Thank you Scott my friend , Julie, Mrs Libby, and Mr. Tuck for my little part in the life of your family. God bless you I pray, Clint Coleman
