Sonny was born on February 28, 1953, in West Monroe, LA to Charles Guinn Phillips, Sr. and Edna Lillian York Phillips. He passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024 at his residence surrounded by loved ones.
Sonny was a man of many titles. He was a mechanic and a fireman, served on the union board at Graphic Packaging, worked his way up from shop steward to Executive Vice President, and retired after 47 years of service. Sonny was a Christian man who was a lifelong member of Asbury Methodist Church. While all those titles were important to him, they weren’t the ones dearest to his heart….
…He was a loving son to his parents and a pestering little brother to his dear sister Rita Bartlett. If you had asked him, he would have told you about how she pushed him out of the window or hit him upside the head more than once.
…He was a husband and best friend to Sandy Phillips. They met in 2008 and swapped rings on March 23, 2013. He loved the memories they made of the years they had together.
…He was father to his son, Dathan Phillips and his wife Kandee, and to his daughter, Brittney Lataxes and her husband Jeremy. He was proud of all of them.
…He wore the title of stepfather to Rachel Bothel (Mathis), Adrianah Richmond, and Jessica Buckalew after he and Sandy united their families. He loved those girls as his own.
…Furthermore, Sonny gained the title of grandfather to Trent, Maggie, Zoie, Ethan, Ty, Trevor, Lillian, and Eliza. To them, he was known as Paw Paw.
…In addition, he was cousin, nephew, and Uncle Sonny to many.
Sonny was also a man of many talents. He was a jokester, a wonderful cook, a fisherman, and a jack of all trades. He spent as much time as he could on fishing trips and out in the garden with his dear cousin Ed Barnes and his wife Barbara Ann. And, of course, he was a fan of his home state’s football team the LSU Tigers, and his hometown’s West Monroe Rebels. If he wasn’t there in person, he was there in spirit cheering them on behind the radio.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Edna York Phillips and his grandson, Jace.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Davis, Ernie Heckfer, Bailey Green, CJ Green, Phillip Green, and Scott Phillips. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ed Barnes, Ken Brooks, Roy Glen McGrew, Rooster Hamby, Donny Jowers, Robert Lawrence, Joe Phillips, and Buster Whittington.
