Funeral services for Charles Hogan, 87, of West Monroe, will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, February 12, 2025 in the Worship Center at First Baptist Church, West Monroe. Dr. Mark Fenn and Dr. Woods Watson will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, February, 11, 2025 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in West Monroe. A private burial will be held at Hasley Cemetery.
Charles Roland Hogan, Sr. was born January 6, 1938, in West Monroe, Louisiana and passed on to glory February 7, 2025, at home surrounded by family. Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Dewitt and Lena Hogan; and one sister, Ruth Thurman.
Charles is survived by his wife of 63 years, Evelyn Copple Hogan, two children and four grandchildren; his daughter, Lisa Davidson and husband Eddie with their children, Jody Davidson and wife Somer, and Beth Davidson, husband Charles Ostlie; his son, Charles “Chuck” R. Hogan Jr. and his wife Staci, with their children, Georgia Hogan, Julia Hogan Broussard and husband, Travis. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Elise, Raimi, and Archer Ostlie, Skylar and Kash Hattaway, and Karter Davidson; brother, Kent Hogan, wife Helen; sister, Sandra Earnhart and her husband Wade; plus many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Charles received Christ as a teenager and accepted salvation by the grace of Jesus which led his life from early days. He was a graduate of West Monroe High School, East Texas Baptist College and earned a Master of Education from Stephen F Austin University. He was a veteran of the US Army marching in the Army Band playing trombone most memorably at the inauguration of JFK. Upon an Honorable Discharge and graduation from his studies he pursued a life of serving the Lord beginning a life in music ministry on staff at numerous churches including Cedar Crest Baptist, First Baptist WM, Fair Park, FBC Kilgore, FBC Lufkin, Trinity Heights in Shreveport and Edgewood Baptist. Among his many ensembles, choirs and orchestra groups were First Voice, Partners in Praise, Cedar Crest Handbells and First West Orchestra. He taught as a professor, earning the position of Fine Arts Director at Angelina College, Lufkin TX.
Eventually, moving back home Charles and his wife, Evelyn opened an Independent Insurance office, Hogan Agency in 1973, in the Hogan Shopping Plaza. Hogan Agency became a family business eventually growing to one of the largest independent agencies in Northeast Louisiana. Insurance was his second career teaching OSHA for contractors, driver safety and many other safety classes. Charles was honored to be the music resource director of the Northeast LA Baptist Missionary Association with lifelong friend, Dr. Jerry Edmondson. He was a lifetime director of NE LA Homebuilders Association and awarded Homebuilders SIF Agency of the Year in 2017.
Charles was an original founder of the WMHS football booster club with Coach Don Shows in 1990 which evolved into the Rebel Club that we know and love today. He enjoyed the success of WMHS football, baseball, Rebel Raiders and all things West Monroe. He was a member of Rotary International, earning the Paul Harris Fellow. Charles was a member of the Twin City Community Band, faithful in attendance with his trombone. He loved the orchestra fellowship even leading a Fourth of July Special at Kiroli Park plus other community concerts and holiday specials. A founding member of Avery Hunting Club and member of D’Arbonne Dutch Oven Cooking Club, he continued his life mission of fellowship and love.
Charles was a member of the Prayer+ Sunday School class at First West, ordained as a deacon in 1978 and his life verse was the following: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16. He always wanted, above everything else, to serve God and share His goodness whether it was in church ministry, music ministry or in business, always learning, teaching and growing in the Lord. Charles loved Jesus, pointing everyone to the gospel of Christ.
Pallbearers are Kent Hogan, Eddie Davidson, Jody Davidson, Travis Broussard, Dustin Fitch and Lucas Fitch.
