Connie Smiley Reeves left a message on June 27, 2025:
Billy Jack was a friend and mentor to so many. As a returning undergraduate student at La Tech, he encouraged me to continue my education by attending graduate school. My interest in the early 80s was Exercise Sciences. It was a growing field at that time, with a handful of graduate programs in the country. He recruited me to join his Powerlifting team while enrolled in a H&PE beginning Weight Lifting class. I wanted to learn more about strength conditioning, and that was a great way to do it. I did learn much under his leadership. He was always encouraging to students, supportive of our interests, and had a wonderful sense of humor. The women's team did win nationals during that time. He drove us to West Point Military Academy for the event. After that he was tasked with finding weight lifting trophies for women with "boobs". We wanted our trophies to reflect our physics and not that of a man. When we went to his office to make that request, he turned red and laughed hysterically. The next few weeks he announced to the team, our trophies now had boobs for the women's team. He provided simple fun and support for us. My condolences to his family for their loss of this great man!

Dr. John P and Carol Muczko left a message on June 20, 2025:
To Carolyn and entire Talton family, Please accept our sincere condolences on your loss of Billy Jack. In my first job after receiving my doctorate, at La Tech, he was my first department chair, leader, and friend. He was always willing to listen to ideas, concerns, and celebrate achievements of the faculty and staff. I remember well the courses I taught there including the treasured weight lifting class he designed, and by which I was honored to instruct. On a personal note, he always treated my wife, Carol and me with respect and kindness each time we’d see him in various campus settings. He assisted me in getting grounded in my career in academe. I am forever grateful. May you all be comforted by God’s grace, peace, and love at this time. John P. and Carol Muczko
