Bettye Acklin Frey, 81, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, friend, mentor and Christian, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, September 25, 2012, at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe. Surrounded by her family, Betty Acklin Frey departed this world, leaving behind a loving family, devoted friends, and lasting memories. Born in Haynesville, Louisiana, on July 11, 1931, Bettye was the daughter of Maude and J.D. Acklin. A graduate of Haynesville High School, she proudly served as the Drum Majorette for her high school band. She attended Louisiana Tech and majored in music, and she was active on campus in her sorority, Delta Zeta. Soon after Louisiana Tech, Bettye returned to Haynesville to be the librarian, and there she met the love her life, Lory Mayfield Frey. She and her husband were inseparable, and they were happily married for 60 years. Bettye served as the Receptionist at Troy and Nichols for many years, and she retired as an Assistant Vice-President. Everyone who walked through the doors of Troy and Nichols was greeted by her beautiful smile, reassuring voice, and positive words! She loved her job at Troy and Nichols, and always maintained contact with her beloved co-workers from those days. Beyond work, Bettye was very involved with the Ouachita High School, and when Mr. Frey took employment at West Monroe High School, she turned her attention to a new drill team there! Mr. Frey founded and sponsored the Rebel Raiders, and she and Mrs. Jo Chisholm Adams were instrumental in the creation of their uniforms. To the day, the Raiders' signature uniform bears the direct influence she had on its creation. Bettye's walk in faith was tremendously enhanced by her membership and involvement in the First United Methodist Church of Monroe. She served in their Book Club, the Administrative Board, and she was a past President of the Anna Gray Noe Sunday School class. Her active participation in UMW Circle 3 and her work in First United Methodist Church shaped much of her life. She was a Delegate to the Methodist Conference, and on many Sundays her smile would be the first to meet fellow church members at the front door. Bettye Frey savored every minute doing the Lord's work, and will be sorely missed by all. She was preceded in death by her parents, Maude Ode Rankin and J. D. Acklin, and her brother J.D. Acklin, Junior. She is survived by her husband, Lory M. Frey, Junior, and his two daughters and their spouses, Lori Frey Sherba and husband, Bob, and daughter, Shelby, and Lisa Frey Miller and her husband Lyle, and children Natalie, Lauren, and David. She had two great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends, as well as sister-in-law, Clarie Acklin. Active Pallbearers will be Freddy Bennett, Paul Crew, Scott Hart, Jayson Morris, Mark Neal and Dan Robertson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jack Arant, Monte Chapman, Mike Kennedy, Ed Miller, Gene Baker, Ed Theus and the Anna Gray Noe Sunday School Class members. Visitation will be from 9 AM until service time at 11 AM Thursday, September 27, at First United Methodist Church in Monroe. Services will begin at 11 AM with a private family graveside interment at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Dean Stockstill and his staff and to Dr. John Hull for their loving, patient, and genuine care. To longtime neighbor and special friend Mrs. Frances Curty, and to her dear caregiver, Sarah Richards, the family extends their appreciation for your constant compassion toward her. Special gratitude goes to Elton Farrar and the Fred's Pharmacy Gang for your professionalism and love for our mother. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Monroe or The Frey Family Rebel Raider Scholarship Fund-contact Miriam Counts, WMHS.
