Funeral services for Benton F. Ben Avery of Calhoun, LA will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, December 8, 2013 at New Chapel Hill Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Charles V. Dupree, Jr. and Rev. Huey Diffey. Interment will follow at New Chapel Hill Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe. Mr. Avery was born on January 9, 1930 in Lincoln Parish, but lived most of his life in Ouachita Parish. He joined the Army Air Force at age 17 and retired from the USAF on July 31, 1968 with the rank of MSGT. He was a former co-owner and operator of B&B Texaco service station in Monroe. He later retired from Glenwood Medical Center as groundskeeper. He was a Deacon and a member of New Chapel Hill Baptist Church, and a member of the T.E.L. Sunday School class. He not only loved the Lord and his family, he also loved his church, and his country. He was a lifetime member of the Air Force Sergeants Association and the Disabled Veterans DAV. He was also a member of the Retired Enlisted Association, a mall walker, and a former volunteer at the Glenwood Medical Mall. Mr. Avery was preceded in death by his parents Joel and Orlean Doyal Avery; brothers Cecil, Herman, Ernest and Kenneth; sister Maurine Johnston; grandson Matthew Hagler and granddaughter Shannon Hagler Hudnal. Mr. Avery is survived by his wife of 58 years, Uella of Calhoun; daughters Joan Williams and husband Glenn of Calhoun, Barbara McQusiton and husband Jeff of Downsville; sons Jack and wife Lea Ann of Choudrant Byron and wife Tammy of West Monroe; granddaughters JoAnna Cannon and husband Steve of Calhoun, Leslie Newbold and husband David of Princeton, Texas, Calley Douglas, Sadey Douglas, Gracey Avery and Ella Avery; grandsons Jeffrey McQuiston, Drew Avery, Slade Avery; great-grandson Jonathan Smith; sisters Marie Thigpen of Sikes, and Myrtle Feazel and husband Bud of West Monroe; brother Charlie and wife Polly of Mena, AR and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Byron Avery, Slade Avery, Drew Avery, Jeff McQuiston, Jeffrey McQuiston and David Newbold. Visitation will be held Sunday from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm at Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe and Monday from 1:00 pm until service time at the church.
