Robert Schneider left a message on October 27, 2024:
Ben Rogers is my lifelong hero, my teenage music teacher, my dear friend — composer, poet, genius guitar player, tender teacher, wise philosopher, home recordist, 1960s garage rocker. This ambitious, sensitive, exuberant, heroic soul has us, and left a lasting mark on this world. For me as a musician, composer, producer and mathematician, everything I have ever done is an expression of this man's influence and his unique, varied, brilliant path through life. Ben taught me to be the musician I became. I was hard to teach. He called me Sparky because I am hyper — I will miss that nickname. Ben was a published poet, composer for orchestra, piano and classical guitar, and prolific songwriter whose insightful lyrics bore traces of Dylan and 60s pop; he was an incredible concert classical guitarist, without peer. He grew up in Dubach, Louisiana, and lived in a log cabin in Grambling that his grandfather built by hand. He spent every day in total creativity: practicing, writing, recording, composing, teaching from morning to night. Ben tried everything in life, he was interested in everything. This world could hardly contain someone so passionate. Ben squeezed life for all it could hold, and pushed at its boundaries through music, poetry, philosophy, and through his influence on musicians and poets throughout Louisiana and the surrounding region. His influence also spread internationally through the music of the Elephant 6 Recording Co. (which I co-founded with my Ruston friends) and my own pop band The Apples in stereo — he exerts a lasting influence on future generations of musicians, who should know that part of the modern musical aesthetic grew from this great man's ideas and his personal example. May your soul find peace, and your spirit live forever, my dear teacher who made me who I am. I will be grateful to you for all my life, for giving me music, poetry and friendship. I love you, Ben. - Robert Schneider (musician and mathematician, leader of The Apples in stereo, co-founder of the Elephant 6 Recording Co., student of Ben Rogers)
