Ann Jones Magown, was born March 19, 1927 in Collinston , La. She passed away on her 91st birthday, March 19, 2018 in West Monroe. Her visitation will be Saturday, from 1-3pm, at Kilpatrick in West Monroe, with the funeral to follow at 3pm, with Dr. Kevin Finley officiating, and burial at Hasley Cemetery.Mother was an active member of McGuire Methodist Church, from 1952 until 2018.She loved her church family. She organized the first hanging of the greens many Christmas ago. She arranged a trans-Atlantic call to the church service one morning from Dr. Albert Schweitzer, a world renowned medical missionary to Africa and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. She was part of the lay-witness movement that swept the nation. Her life long mantra after that, was, Smile, God loves you and so do I. She and daddy sang in the choir for almost 30 years. She had a true servant heart, giving spirit, and loved her family unconditionally. She once gave her salary for a year to a sweet nephew, and his family, that had cancer. Her love language was food. She made countless meals for the church, the bereaved, and all the stray kids we drug up over a lifetime. This past Christmas she was furious at me because we werent bringing a dish for the big meal. I tried unsuccessfully to explain the she was now elevated to exalted status. Daddy and Momma both made 90 plus years. She was born during the great flood of 1927 and survived the next one in 1932, also. Born into a family of five children, she was raised by our grandmother, who was 25 years old and alone with such a daunting task. With uncles and aunts all pitching in, all five grew up to be outstanding citizens. The years of the Great Depression made her family even more close. They were members of the Salvation Army, ministering to the poorest of the poor. That is how she met the love of her life. Daddy parents were also with the church and Monroe was where they were sent in the early 1940. Both of my future grandmother collaborated on a date, when daddy came home on leave from the war. The plan was for him to come by her house, before a basketball game, for a meal. Well, he later admitted to stopping at the Copper Kettle and grabbing a burger, just in case she couldnt cook. They married in 1947, built a house, and started raising three children. They lived on Tulane Avenue for the rest of their lives. She became a fixture at Highland School, West Monroe JR High, and West Monroe High School. Barbara was the darling of everywhere, with a melodic voice, and in all the choirs. Mother spent plenty of time at the schools mitigating the errors in judgment of Steve and David. The retirement years were spent actively engaged in the lives of the grandchildren and great grandchildren, and their names changed to Granny and Poppa. Mother passed on to the streets of gold and into the light where daddy was waiting at 11:58 pm on her 91st birthday. It was said that she kept her guests waiting on the edge of their seats until she made her grand arrival in a chariot! She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Charles. Left to cherish her memories are her children, Steve Magown, David Magown, and Barbara, wife of her other son, Kevin Finley; Grandchildren, Amanda Finley McKaskle (husband Josh), Stephen Magown, Patrick Finley (wife Hannah), Lindsay Magown, and McKennon Magown. Great grandchildren, Elanor and Everett Cate, Whit McKaskle, Madison, Meredith, and Harrison Magown, Bryson Magown, Hazel and Cora Finley.
